The best German event rider makes a mistake in the first of two jumping competitions. Gold is still within reach.
Despite a knockdown, Michael Jung is still on course for gold. The event rider made a mistake in the first round of the show jumping with his horse Chipmunk, but is still in first place. If he manages a clear round in the second round (3 p.m.), the 41-year-old professional from Horb will win his fourth gold medal at the Olympic Games.
Jung and Chipmunk received four penalty points in Versailles on Monday. But Briton Laura Collett collected 4.80 penalty points with London and even fell back to third place behind Australian Christopher Burton with Shadow Man.
Julia Krajewski rode with Nickel without a single knockdown and only received 0.40 penalty points for exceeding the set time. The rider from Warendorf is in eleventh place.
Wahler still there despite fall
Despite his fall in the cross-country the day before, Christoph Wahler also rode the first round of the show jumping. The German team received 200 additional penalty points for this and ended up in 14th place in the final ranking. Gold went to Great Britain ahead of France and the surprise team from Japan.
Wahler’s start was only possible due to a special feature of the Olympic regulations. While in all other eventing competitions a fall means disqualification for the entire competition, at the Olympic Games it is possible to ride again the next day after a positive veterinary examination. Wahler’s horse Carjatan passed this vet check early on Monday morning.
However, Wahler was disqualified for the individual ranking. “98 percent of the whole thing was good, but in the end it is a catastrophic result,” commented the 30-year-old from Bad Bevensen after his clear round in the jumping. “That is of course frustrating when you saw how Carjatan jumped today. Anything would have been possible.”
