Olympic preliminary round: Hockey coach freaks out and yells at player

There is still one game left, the German women’s hockey team has just won a second victory against hosts France. But another moment remains memorable.

The German women’s hockey team has taken a step towards the quarter-finals with their second victory at the Olympic Games. In the third group match, the team of national coach Valentin Altenburg beat hosts France 5:1 (3:0). The goals for the fourth-placed team in the World Cup were scored by captain Nike Lorenz (3rd, 52nd and 53rd minutes), Charlotte Stapenhorst (11th) and Amelie Wortmann (28th). Yohanna Lhopital (51st) was successful for France.

Scandal during the break: Hockey coach yells at professional

There was a loud argument after the first quarter when Altenburg verbally attacked national player Anne Schröder, clearly audible to the TV viewers. “Anne, shut up and come here, your body language is annoying me,” said the 43-year-old. “That’s bad of you. My goodness, pull yourself together now.”

Altenburg was visibly upset by Schröder’s behavior, who had turned away from the team circle and briefly shook her head before his outburst. The 29-year-old endured the coach’s tirade and at least did not respond audibly.

In a double interview after the game, however, the coach and player played down the matter. According to a report in “Bild,” Altenburg doesn’t even remember the outburst. “I won’t be able to deny it,” the paper quotes him as saying. “Anne and I have been working closely together for years. That’s unconditional trust. The team needed emotions. We delivered them.”

Hockey pro Schröder had to laugh at the emotional outburst, she said. “It’s a lot of demands and perfectionism coming together. It’s forgotten again!” The scandal was appropriate at the time.

“He was simply unhappy because he had the feeling that I had let my shoulders drop. I got a short message.” That was okay for her at that moment: “I’ve known Valentin for a really long time, we have a very, very close relationship of trust. So we don’t hold it against each other and just carried on.”

German women’s hockey team beats Netherlands and France

In terms of sport, everything went according to plan at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir in the north-east of Paris. It only took two and a half minutes for Germany to take the lead. France’s women are taking part in the Olympic hockey tournament for the first time and had problems with the experienced Germans, who, despite a few mistakes, played to their strengths overall. The 27-year-old Lorenz was particularly impressive with her three goals.

The team had previously won 2-0 against Japan in the opening match, but then lost 1-2 to top favorites Netherlands. In the remaining two games in Group A, the European Championship third-placed team will face China on Friday (10:00 a.m.) and European runners-up Belgium on Saturday (7:45 p.m.). Four of the six teams will advance directly to the quarter-finals.
