Some Olympic successes bring with them real curiosities. The Italian gymnast Giorgia Villa and her teammates Angela Andreoli, Alice D’Amato, Manila Esposito and Elisa Iorio finished on the winners’ podium in the team competition. This was the first time in 96 years that the Italian women have won a medal in this sport.
The “blue fairies”, as the team is also called, were only defeated by the team of US superstar Simone Biles and were able to secure the silver medal. Since 2021, the athlete has been sponsored by Parmigiano Reggiano, the official consortium of Parmesan cheese producers. At the beginning of this collaboration, the Italian photographer took pictures that are now going around the world. They show Giorgia Villa practicing her sport – but often together with the protected cheese from the provinces of Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, parts of Bologna and parts of Mantua.
The pictures have not only been a huge success on social media, but have also prompted media outlets such as “”, “”, “” and “” to report on the gymnast.
For the cheese consortium, supporting athletes is nothing unusual. It says: “Rich in protein, suitable for sports and of course lactose-free, Reggiano Parmigiano always gives you what you need, with a little extra love!” Villa also called the cheese her “best friend” in 2021 when she first presented the pictures with the Parmesan to the public.
The 21-year-old is quite creative when it comes to her cheese content. She regularly publishes short stories and pictures on social media about the round pride of the Italians.
