Anna-Maria Wagner defeated crisis of meaning and opponents – until the semi-finals

Anna-Maria Wagner fell into an existential crisis after the last games. The judoka fought her way through a phase of “post-Olympic depression” to get back to Paris. There, a fatal moment cost her the medal.

One of the special things about the Olympics is that the games make the supposedly small ones big for two and a half weeks. That they put niche athletes on a stage alongside stars. Judoka Anna-Maria Wagner, 28, reigning world champion in the light heavyweight division up to 78 kilograms, two-time bronze winner in Tokyo 2021, is a good example of this.

Everyone knows her in her sport. But when it became clear that Wagner would carry the German flag at the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Paris together with Dennis Schröder, many people probably typed her name into the nearest search engine.
