Olympic Games: Neugebauer on course for gold in the decathlon – Kaul far behind

Gold favorite Leo Neugebauer has taken the lead after three disciplines at the Olympic Games. Things aren’t going so well for Niklas Kaul. A decathlete who was nominated later is doing well.

Favorite Leo Neugebauer is heading for the gold medal in the Olympic decathlon. After a good start in the 100-meter sprint and long jump, the 24-year-old took the lead after the third discipline in the Stade de France.

16.55 meters in the shot put meant the second best distance in the competition. With 2,876 points, the world best of the year is 78 points ahead of Tokyo Olympic champion Damian Warner from Canada. Third is Ayden Owens-Delerme from Puerto Rico with 2,786 points

As number 1 in the world, Neugebauer is the top candidate for gold. At the World Championships in Budapest a year ago, he had fallen from first place to fifth place at halftime. In Saint-Denis, north of Paris, the athlete, who is competing for VfB Stuttgart, is hoping that this won’t happen again.

Kaul loses ground

For former world and European champion Niklas Kaul, medals are a long way off. But his strengths only come into play on the second day of competition this Saturday. The 26-year-old struggled repeatedly in the first three disciplines – the athlete from USC Mainz had clearly set his sights higher. 2,364 points mean only 21st place in the field of 22 decathletes.

As the third German starter, Till Steinforth, who was nominated later and arrived at short notice, is doing well. After three disciplines, Steinforth has 2,658 points and is in tenth place. The 22-year-old all-rounder from SV Halle replaces Manuel Eitel, who was unable to compete at short notice. Eitel had to cancel due to a corona infection.

Sad Mayer not at the start

Decathlon world record holder Kevin Mayer cannot take part in the wrestling spectacle in his native France. After a fitness test, he had to withdraw on Thursday due to the effects of a thigh injury. World champion Pierce LePage from Canada was also recently forced to withdraw from the Olympics.
