The Argentine national team lost 1 to 0 with France and was eliminated from the Olympic Games of Paris 2024 in the quarter-finals.
The Argentine team kept the French in their own half throughout the second half, but their lack of accuracy cost them dearly.
The hosts scored the only goal of the match in the 5th minute, with a header from Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Michael Olise could have extended the lead but the VAR ruled out his goal for a stamp inside the area in the pass prior to the striker’s goal.
However, the team led by Javier Mascherano had two very clear opportunities to take the lead: first with a shot from Ezequiel Fernández that was blocked by goalkeeper Guillaume Restes, and a solo header from Giuliano Simeone that went over the crossbar.
Argentina dominated the entire second half, with the midfielders making attempts and some of Álvarez’s shots going over the crossbar or being blocked by the French defence.
In the final minute, Michael Olise made it 2-0 for France, but a dubious stamp on the previous pass that was reviewed by the VAR by Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev allowed the Argentines to maintain their one-goal lead.
