Summer Games in Paris: DOSB boss Weikert praises German performances at the Olympics

In Paris, the President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation was particularly pleased with the performances in team sports. In other competitions, however, things could have gone better.

Despite some unfulfilled medal hopes, DOSB boss Thomas Weikert is satisfied with the German team’s performance so far at the Olympic Games. “The performances are flawless everywhere. When we look at the teams, they are very successful. They are all doing great,” Weikert told the German Press Agency.

In basketball and hockey, the men and women have already reached the quarter-finals, as have the football, handball and volleyball teams. The women’s handball team can follow suit today. In 3×3 basketball, the women’s team is even close to making it directly into the semi-finals in its Olympic debut. “We’ll have to wait and see what the final outcome is,” said Weikert about the German teams’ chances of winning medals.

Weikert: “Also a bit unlucky”

According to the President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, things did not go quite as planned in the other sports. “We could have done a little better in the individual competitions. We were a little unlucky there,” said Weikert.

After 113 of 329 decisions, Germany has only won seven medals: two gold, three silver, two bronze. Boxer Nelvie Tiafack has also already secured a medal after reaching the semi-finals of the super heavyweight division. Weikert expressed confidence for the rest of the Games. “I think things are looking up now,” said the 62-year-old.
