The German 3×3 basketball team continues its strong performance at the Summer Games. The team is unstoppable against Canada and is in the semifinals.
The German 3×3 basketball team is sensationally in the semifinals at its Olympic debut and is aiming for a medal. With an 18:15 win against Spain, the team achieved its sixth victory in the final seventh group game. The German Basketball Association’s selection of Svenja Brunckhorst, Sonja Greinacher, Elisa Mevius and Marie Reichert thus finished the preliminary round in first place.
“I’m speechless. We always had an answer, which is why we won six games,” said Brunckhorst, praising the team: “It’s been a long time since I played in a team like this, where you trust each other so blindly. Everyone has the same influence in attack and defense – it doesn’t get any better than that.”
The semi-finals will take place on Monday, the opponent has not yet been decided. The medals will also be awarded on Monday evening at the venue on the Place de la Concorde.
Strong start thanks to good throwing rate
Greinacher gave her team a perfect start in the duel with Spain with a successful long-range shot. The German women appeared highly concentrated and determined to control the game. A good shooting rate ensured a quick 6:2 lead, but then the selection made too many turnovers and had to accept the equalizer at 10:10.
In the remaining five of the ten minutes of play, the match remained close and exciting. Germany only briefly had a three-point lead, Spain managed to equalize again at 15:15. In the final minute, however, Greinacher and Co. secured the win.
The DBB selection had already made a strong start to the tournament with victories against the co-favorites from the USA and Canada. The best two teams in the group of eight will advance directly to the semifinals. The teams placed third to sixth will determine the other two semifinalists in a play-in round.
Olympic debut for German team
The modified form of streetball has become increasingly popular in recent years. In 2021 in Tokyo, it was part of the Olympic program for the first time. German teams were not involved at the time, and the women’s title went to the USA. The game is played on one basket, with three of the four players on a team on the field at the same time.
