Olympia: Death threats against organizers of the opening ceremony – investigations

The Olympic opening ceremony caused a lot of discussion. Some people were enthusiastic, others were horrified. Now the public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation after the organizers were threatened.

After the spectacular and controversial Olympic opening ceremony in Paris, official investigations have been launched into death threats made against those responsible for the show. The French public prosecutor’s office announced this on Sunday. Previously, the artistic director of the opening ceremony, Thomas Jolly, had filed a corresponding complaint.

Jolly and two other people responsible for the opening ceremony “have filed a lawsuit for death threats,” the public prosecutor’s office said. The artistic director had previously filed a lawsuit for other hate comments, and the Office for Combating Crimes Against Humanity and Hate Crimes (OCLCH) took over the investigation.

Olympic opening ceremony caused controversy

Jolly was widely praised for the brilliant opening ceremony. However, several scenes also sparked criticism in conservative and right-wing extremist circles. Particularly controversial is a depiction of a banquet of Greek gods, which is also reminiscent of the famous Last Supper painting by Leonardo da Vini. It features several drag queens, a largely naked singer painted blue, and the French DJ Barbara Butch, who advocates for the rights of lesbian and fat women. In response to hate comments, Butch has filed a lawsuit for “homophobic and fat-phobic insults”.

Jolly later explained that they were figures from Greek mythology. He had not wanted to offend religious feelings. Rather, the scene depicted a celebration on Mount Olympus, the mountain of the gods that gave the Olympic Games their name.
