Athletics: 100-meter gold for Lyles – Hartmann out in the semifinals

World champion Noah Lyles from the USA is crowned the 100-meter Olympic champion in Paris. Joshua Hartmann’s race ends in the semifinals.

After a decision made by a thousandth of a second, world champion Noah Lyles is now also Olympic champion over 100 meters. The 27-year-old from the USA sprinted to gold in the final in Saint-Denis near Paris in 9.79 seconds.

Lyles is the first 100-meter Olympic champion from the USA since Justin Gatlin won gold 20 years ago in Athens. In front of rapper Snoop Dogg and around 70,000 fans in the Stade de France, Lyles triumphantly held up his name tag and danced across the track.

Tokyo Olympic champion fifth

Silver went to Jamaican shooting star Kishane Thompson, who ran the same time, and bronze went to Fred Kerley from the USA in 9.81 seconds. The former world champion won silver in 2021 in Tokyo. Tokyo Olympic champion and European champion Marcell Jacobs from Italy came fifth in 9.85 seconds.

Sprinter Joshua Hartmann clearly missed the final. The Cologne native finished seventh in his semi-final in 10.16 seconds. To advance to the final, he would have needed one of the first two places or a faster time. The South African Akani Simbine took the win in 9.87 seconds, and Letsile Tebogo from Botswana also advanced directly in 9.91 seconds.

Hartmann in action over 200 meters

Hartmann then spoke of two solid races over 100 meters. “Nothing special, unfortunately,” said the 25-year-old, who also spoke of a bit of pressure given the big stage and said: “I’ll leave the show to the guys who are running 9.80 up front.”

The German record holder Owen Ansah, who was the first national sprinter to stay under ten seconds at the end of June with a time of 9.99 seconds, did not qualify for the semi-finals in Saint-Denis near Paris.

Hartmann and Ansah are scheduled to compete in the German sprint relay team at the Paris Games, which won bronze at the European Championships in Rome. Before that, Hartmann will compete in his specialty, the 200 meters, where he holds the German record. The preliminary heats will take place on Monday morning.

Honsel sixth in high jump

In the other medal awards of the evening, German competitors came away empty-handed. Christina Honsel came sixth in the high jump with 1.95 meters, while world record holder Jaroslawa Mahutschich from Ukraine only needed 2.00 meters for gold. In the hammer throw, Merlin Hummel came tenth with 76.03 meters, while world champion Ethan Katzberg achieved the winning distance of 84.12 meters in his first attempt.
