Tina Unterberger spoke of many question marks after the final training runs before today’s natural track tobogganing World Cup in Umhausen. The track conditions are difficult, said the 35-year-old, as the races were about to be canceled due to the onset of warm weather. “In the morning it was now nice and crispy with minus nine degrees”, reported Unterberger happily. A thick layer of ice is essential for racing sleds with sharp runners.
However, there was not enough time for the train to “really ice it through” – as Unterberger calls it. “So half-frozen and with lots of air pockets, it feels like driving on a sorbet”, explains the Bad Goiserin, which gives rise to the many question marks.
Lanthaler set the pace
The training runs, in which Unterberger was third and fifth, showed a familiar picture in terms of power relations – and with Evelin Lanthaler at the top – but it was difficult to assess how the ice will be on the day of the race. Together with her service man, Unterberger and roommate Michelle Diepold tinkered until late into the night yesterday to find the right preparation.
The Askö Gmunden athlete had very few training runs this winter. On the one hand because of the mild temperatures during the holidays, on the other hand because she didn’t have the time during the week because of the police training. She was last able to complete her internship in the neighboring town of Bad Ischl. “That was really cool.” At the end of April, the completion of her apprenticeship is approaching with the official examination.
