All-round winner Malaika Mihambo shows nerves of steel in the Olympic qualification. The long jumper makes it to the final in her last attempt. The distance gives us great hope.
Long jump Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo has made it to the finals at the Olympic Games in Paris after a thrilling race. In the qualification, the 30-year-old exceeded the required distance of 6.75 meters by eleven centimeters in her third jump after two invalid attempts. Mihambo jumped 30 centimeters short of the board to be on the safe side, underlining her good jumping form.
Many jumpers struggled on their way to the medal decision on Thursday in the Stade de France. The best distance was achieved by the American Tara Davis-Woodhall with 6.90 meters, while European Championship runner-up Larissa Iapichino jumped 6.87 meters.
The other two German jumpers were eliminated after disappointing performances. Laura Raquel Müller only managed 6.40 meters, Mikaelle Assani only 6.24 meters.
Three years ago in Tokyo, Mihambo was crowned Olympic champion. The two-time world and European champion could become the first long jumper to win gold at two consecutive Olympic Games.
