Ehlers/Wickler are in brilliant form in the Olympic tournament. In the quarterfinals, there is a close first set. But the Hamburg team has answers.
The beach volleyball duo Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler can continue to dream of the gold medal at the Olympics. The Hamburg team defeated the Dutch Stefan Boermans/Yorick de Groot 22:20, 21:15 in the quarterfinals and took their fifth win in five games in the stadium in front of the Eiffel Tower.
This raises the Germans’ hopes of a second gold coup in the men’s category after Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann in London in 2012. In the semifinals on Thursday, the duo will face the winner between Pablo Herrera Allepuz/Adrián Gavira Collado (Spain) and Anders Berntsen Mol/Christian Sandlie Sörum (Norway).
German women already eliminated
Once again, Ehlers and Wickler’s blocking and serving pressure worked extremely well. Even when the Dutch took the lead shortly before the end of the first set, the Germans were able to respond. In the second set, the Hamburg team pulled ahead early on. They showed their defensive strength, but also benefited from some Dutch mistakes. They also scored two aces with net rollers.
Germany was represented in Paris by two women’s teams: Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann lost in the round of 16. Rio Olympic champion Laura Ludwig and Louisa Lippmann were eliminated after the preliminary round. 24 men’s and women’s pairs will play for the Olympic gold medal until August 10.
