Olympic Games in Paris: Nowitzki on German basketball players: “I would never have thought”

Dirk Nowitzki cheers on the German basketball players at the Olympics in Paris. The legend would not have expected the upswing of Dennis Schröder’s team – and is expecting further great achievements.

Dirk Nowitzki is enthusiastic about the German basketball players – and now believes his successors can win the first Olympic medal. “It won’t be easy against France,” the legend told the German Press Agency before the semi-final against the home team at the Summer Games in Paris. “But the boys have the class and the talent to prevail in front of the home crowd. Then we’ll have to see what happens.”

The world champions, coached by national team coach Gordon Herbert, will face France on Thursday (5.30 p.m.) and would be guaranteed at least silver if they won. In the preliminary round, the team led by captain Dennis Schröder defeated the hosts in a dominant fashion with a score of 85:71.

For the German Basketball Association, it would be the first Olympic medal for an indoor team after gold for the 3×3 players. “That a German team would finish third in the European Championships, become world champions, and then reach the semifinals at the Olympic Games – I would never have thought that was possible,” said Nowitzki.

During his time, the 46-year-old led the national team to silver at the 2005 European Championship and bronze at the 2002 World Cup. Now the former NBA champion wants to continue to follow the German team at the Olympic tournament in Paris. “I will be there live, no matter how it turns out,” announced Nowitzki.
