Researchers and scientists of the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) They found a new species of fungus in the Baritú National Parklocated in Jumpand they baptized him as “Messi”.
This is a discovery by the Institute of Mycology and Botany (INMIBO UBA-CONICET)who identified two unknown species of fungi and named one of them “Cercopemyces messii” in honor of Lionel Messi.

The discovery of these new species occurred within the framework of a campaign in the aforementioned protected area during 2023.
There they carried out surveys and collected specimens of both C. messii and Clitocybe cedrelae, the other species described in the article published in the journal Mycological Progress.
The publication includes taxonomic descriptions, field photographs, illustrations, scanning electron microscope images, and comparisons with similar and closely related species.
He Baritú National Park protects a portion of more than 72 thousand hectares of Yungas, a system of cloud forests that grow on the slopes of The Andes in northwestern Argentina and is home to a significant diversity of agarical mushrooms, with many species yet to be discovered.
The species were found in a section of the park made up of cedar trees, known as El Cedral. According to the authors, these new species should be considered endangered, given that their natural habitats are also at risk.
This highlights the importance of protected areas for the conservation of biodiversity in the country’s different ecoregions and as key sites for research and the discovery of new species for science.
