The two German sprinters can dream of a medal in the Keirin. Getting into the semi-finals is no problem.
The two former world champions Lea Sophie Friedrich and Emma Hinze have confidently reached the semi-finals of the Keirin at the Olympic track cycling competitions. Friedrich took first place in her quarter-final run at the Velodrome in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, which was overshadowed by a fall. Hinze then managed to take second place in her race.
In the Friedrich Run, there was a heavy fall after crossing the finish line. The Dutchwoman Steffie van der Peet slid into the Chinese Liying Yuan. The Belgian Nicky Degrendele was then also swept away.
The semi-final in the combat sprint will be held from 6:15 p.m. in two runs with six riders each. The three fastest in each run will advance to the final.
Friedrich two-time world champion
Friedrich won the Keirin World Championship title in 2021 and 2022, and last year he finished third at the championships in Glasgow. Hinze raced to gold in the Keirin at the 2020 World Championships in Berlin. Friedrich and Hinze won bronze in the team sprint together with Pauline Grabosch at the start.
Meanwhile, Tim Torn Teutenberg started the men’s omnium with a tenth place in the scratch. The four-event competition now includes the speed race, the elimination race and the final points race.
