Two more tournaments and beach volleyball player Laura Ludwig will end her impressive career. What comes after that? She is at least looking forward to one special day.
Right at the beginning of the interview with RTL, Laura Ludwig openly admits that she urgently needs to “calm down”. Despite the stress of competition in recent weeks, Germany’s most famous beach volleyball player appears in good spirits in front of the camera. It seems as if she has already overcome the early Olympic exit with Louisa Lippmann. Since last week, her fans have known that it’s over after this season – a decision that has been maturing in her mind for some time. Ludwig explains: “It was a process. It was important to me that I could travel to Paris with the team focused. At the same time, I mentally prepared myself for the end of my career.”
She enjoyed her time in Paris all the more. In an interview she said: “I really absorbed a lot from the last few days. I had a lot of conversations with other players and medal winners, but the time with my family was also wonderful.”

Laura Ludwig is looking forward to more time with family
She will soon be seeing her family and children much more often. “Up until now, beach volleyball was her top priority. Having more time for other things soon – for example, family matters or events – feels really good.” But above all, she will finally be able to see her sons Teo (6) and Lenny Matthias (2) regularly at home instead of constantly traveling.
Her youngest son, Lenny, is particularly pleased with her retirement. “He has often said: ‘Mommy, don’t work!’ or ‘Mommy, don’t train!'” and she jokes, “maybe they’ll soon ask when the next tournament is.”
But she is already looking forward to one day: “Our son Teo is starting school in September. I am really looking forward to him starting school. We have already looked into which shop we will go to to look at school bags.”
After the career is before the career
Laura Ludwig has already made plans for the time after her professional career: “I will definitely stay in beach volleyball and pass on my knowledge.” This is not just about her playing expertise, but also about areas such as nutrition and mental strength. She can also imagine a future in TV – she already had the opportunity to work as a guest commentator for ARD at the Olympic Games.
In August she will compete in her last tournaments with Louisa Lippmann – at the Beach Volleyball European Championships in the Netherlands and at the Rothenbaum in Hamburg.
