After the German mixed sprinters were eliminated from the Olympics, a debate about the team’s personnel raged for days. The focus was on Alica Schmidt. How do you continue after a relay team has become a controversial issue?
When Alica Schmidt takes over the baton in Paris on Friday morning, she seems like an athlete who is determined to show that she belongs here, at the Summer Olympics, at the Stade de France, in front of 70,000 spectators.
As was the case in the mixed 4 x 400 meter relay, which escalated into a dispute that became a disaster for the German Athletics Association (DLV), Schmidt is waiting in second place in the women’s relay. And just like a week ago, the competition is basically already over when Schmidt is handed the baton.
Once again she starts second to last in the field. Once again the first competitors in the race for the three places in the final have long since run away. Once again all she can do is run after them.
