After winning her second gold medal in Paris, Simone Biles beamed as she held up a small goat pendant dangling from her necklace to the cameras. The 27-year-old American is called “Goat” by her fans because she has won more awards than any other gymnast. In her sport, Biles is the greatest of all time, the “Greatest Of All Time”, or “GOAT” for short. The three-dimensional piece of jewelry is said to be set with more than 540 diamonds – and has a special meaning for the athlete. Before competitions, the animal reminds her of her previous achievements, Biles revealed after winning the all-around competition: “It tells me: ‘You can do it, you’ve done it before!'” Biles already wore an embroidered rhinestone goat’s head on her leotard at the 2019 US Championships.
The glittering goat is also a self-confident message to hate commentators and internet trolls. At the 2021 Summer Games in Tokyo, Simone Biles had to abandon the final of the team all-around competition due to mental problems, after which she was accused of cowardice and a lack of sportsmanship, especially from right-wing conservative circles.
The athlete is now celebrating a breathtaking comeback in Paris, and many people want to watch her.
