Olympia 2024: Breaker Raygun becomes an internet star

An Australian scientist tries out unusual moves at the Olympic breaking premiere. But neither the judges nor the internet are impressed.

From a purely sporting perspective, nothing will be remembered about Rachael Gunn after these Summer Games. And yet the Australian with the stage name Raygun became an internet star at the Olympic breaking premiere. With zero points, the 36-year-old was the worst of the 16 participants – and the internet was also amused by her rather unusual and simple style.

“What my five year old niece does after she says ‘look at me’,” wrote one X-user of Gunn’s performance. Another wrote: “It’s amazing she made it to the Olympics. Don’t you have anyone better in Australia?”

Break-dance athlete Raygun: “I do my thing”

Gunn rolled around on the floor or hopped like a kangaroo. She took the jury’s assessment calmly. “All my movements are original. Creativity is very important to me and that’s why I try to show my art out there,” said Gunn. “Sometimes the jury likes it, sometimes it doesn’t. I do my thing and it’s art. That’s what it’s about.”

At 36, she is almost twice as old as many of her competitors. In her home country, she is a scientist and gives lectures. “A year ago, many of my students didn’t believe me when I said I was training for the Olympics. They were pretty shocked when they typed my name into Google and saw that I had qualified,” said Gunn.

World star Adele also reacted to the athlete’s somewhat questionable performance. At one of her concerts in Munich, she asked the audience if anyone had seen Raygun’s dance. The dance and the reactions to it made her so happy. “My friends and I were pissing our pants laughing,” said Adele on stage.
