Russian driver Sergei Karjakin had an accident during the seventh stage of the Dakar rally-raid in Saudi Arabia. Snag Racing co-driver Anton Vlasyuk reported about a head-on collision of a Russian ATV with an Italian one.
The Sport-Express newspaper clarified that the incident took place on Sunday, January 9th. The Russian racer will most likely not be able to continue his performance if the all-terrain vehicle is not repaired in time.
“The accident happened at about 100 km / h. The Italian navigator seems to have a fractured spine. The accident is very serious, ”Karjakin himself said in a video on Instagram.
According to him, the frame of the all-terrain vehicle is intact, but the front of the frame is badly damaged. The vehicle will be repaired.
“If everything works out, Snag Racing will start the next (eighth. – Ed.) Special stage,” the athlete expressed hope.
At the same time, Vlasyuk added that the Italian racer Marco Carrara accused the Russian pilot Karjakin of a head-on collision.
“I want to show that we were driving correctly, because now the pilot of the car that crashed into us wanted to accuse us of driving against the course,” said the team’s navigator.
According to him, the Italian racer himself collided with an ATV of the Russian team.
“He left because of [песчаных] piles, from which he should not have left at all. They got lost, so fate was that we met near the dunes, ”explained Vlasyuk.
The French racer Sebastien Loeb (Prodrive) won in the car classification at the seventh stage, Sport-Express reports. Its result is 3 hours 9 minutes and 32 seconds. The second was Qatari pilot Nasser Al-Attiyah. The third was the Spaniard Carlos Sainz Sr.
After the sixth stage of the Dakar in Saudi Arabia, Sergey Karjakin took the eighth place in the overall standings of the rally-raid in the all-terrain vehicle category.
Earlier, on January 4, the crew led by Russian Dmitry Sotnikov won the third stage of the Dakar rally-marathon in the truck category. The team covered the distance of 255 km in 2 hours 43 minutes 25 seconds. The second result was shown by the crew of Andrey Karginov, the team’s truck finished 70 seconds later.
Dakar will end on January 14. Competitions are held in Saudi Arabia.
