US to send non-binary skater to Beijing Olympics

The United States will send a non-binary athlete to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics for the first time. This was reported on the website of the US Figure Skating Federation.

This will be the American figure skater Timothy Leduc, who identifies himself as “neither man nor woman” and prefers to be referred to by the pronoun “they.”

He is included in the US national figure skating team for the Winter Olympics.

Leduc is paired with Ashley Kane-Gribble. In January, they became the US figure skating champions and qualified for the 2022 Games in Beijing.

NBC reports that the skater could make history by becoming the first non-binary athlete to compete in the Winter Olympics.

The XXIV Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing from 4 to 20 February 2022. The capital of the PRC was chosen as the venue at the session of the International Olympic Committee in Kuala Lumpur on July 31, 2015.

In July 2021, Olympic commentators from several television networks, including NBC Sports and the BBC, were at the center of a scandal over the pronoun they used to describe the performance of Alana Smith, the first-ever non-binary skateboarder in Olympic history. Commentators used feminine pronouns to describe Smith’s performances. At the same time, the skateboarder herself insists that she be called gender neutral pronouns “they”.
