Tennis: Struff loses first match after Olympic withdrawal

Jan-Lennard Struff did not compete in his second singles match at the Olympic Games in Paris. Now the tennis pro is back on the court at an ATP tournament in the USA for the first time.

Jan-Lennard Struff has lost his first tennis match after withdrawing from the singles competition at the Olympic Games in Paris. In the first round of the Cincinnati Open, the 34-year-old Davis Cup player lost 6:4, 4:6, 3:6 to the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Struff withdrew from the singles competition two weeks ago after his first match at the Olympic Games in France. The Warsteiner decided not to take part in the singles competition again out of concern about a long absence due to a hip injury. Last year, the German number two had to take a break for several months due to hip problems.

Struff continued to compete in doubles in Paris with Dominik Koepfer, as the strain there was less and the running distances were not as long. The two German professionals were eliminated in the Olympic quarterfinals by the Australian duo Matthew Ebden/John Peers.
