First game, first goal, first title: Superstar Kylian Mbappé wins the UEFA Super Cup with Real Madrid. The Frenchman’s strong debut leaves us wanting more.
Football superstar Kylian Mbappé celebrated his first goal and his first title with the Royals in his first competitive game for Real Madrid. The Champions League winners secured the UEFA Super Cup in Warsaw with a 2-0 (0-0) victory against the Italian Europa League winners Atalanta Bergamo in the first game since Toni Kroos’ retirement. Fede Valverde (59th minute) and Mbappé (68th) were the match winners for Real coach Carlo Ancelotti’s team.
German international Antonio Rüdiger was also happy about winning the first title of the season. The last German UEFA Super Cup winner was FC Bayern in 2020.
Kylian Mbappé in the starting eleven
The Italian coach had immediately nominated Mbappé for Real’s starting eleven. The 25-year-old played alongside Brazilian Vinícius Júnior and former Dortmund player Jude Bellingham against Bergamo. In his first game for Real, however, the French 2018 World Cup winner lacked the bond with his new teammates in the first half. Atalanta Bergamo’s defenders were able to defuse many of Mbappé’s moves over the course of the game. That changed in the second 45 minutes.
But the Italians had the first chances of the game. In the 25th minute, the crossbar prevented Real from falling behind. After a cross from Bergamo’s Marten de Roon, Real’s Eder Militao headed the ball onto his own post. Two minutes later, a shot from Atalanta’s Ederson narrowly missed the goal of Real keeper Thibaut Courtois. Rodrygo had the first notable chance for the Madrilenians shortly before half-time: his shot from seven meters hit the crossbar.
After the break, Real Madrid turns up the heat
Bergamo also applied pressure at the start of the second half. Courtois made a brilliant save after a header from Mario Pasalic (47th minute). Real then turned up the heat. Valverde, who was wearing Kroos’ former number 8, pushed the ball over the line from two meters after a preparatory pass from Vinícius Júnior to take the lead. Mbappé then made his big appearance in the 68th minute. Bellingham set up the Frenchman’s first goal with a wonderful pass on the left. From close range, he left Bergamo goalkeeper Juan Musso no chance. In the 83rd minute, the Real newcomer was substituted to great cheers from the fans.
Mbappé was introduced to the Royal Club almost a month ago. He came from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer and signed a contract until 2029. Fans of the Champions League winners are pinning their hopes on the 2018 World Champion for a title-rich future. Mbappé was absent from Real Madrid’s US tour in preparation for the new season because he was on vacation in Germany after the European Championship in the summer.
