The underdogs made life difficult for the favorites in the first few cup games. For a long time it looked like there would be several sensations. Will an amateur club make it to the second round?
Three Bundesliga teams only managed to avoid a disgrace on the first day of the DFB Cup with great difficulty. TSG Hoffenheim had to go to a penalty shootout against regional league team Würzburger Kickers – but won 5:3 (2:2, 1:1). FSV Mainz won against third division team and neighbours Wehen Wiesbaden with great difficulty 3:1 (1:1, 0:1) after extra time. Newly promoted FC St. Pauli also came close to being knocked out of the cup, but won 3:2 (2:2, 1:0) after extra time against regional league team Hallescher FC.
Würzburg took the lead after a serious mistake by TSG goalkeeper Luca Philipp. The goalkeeper stepped over the ball on a harmless back pass – Enes Küc reacted quickly and scored in the 11th minute. Alexander Prass (18th) corrected the mistake relatively quickly for the Bundesliga team. In extra time, however, Moritz Hannemann (100th) gave the fans of the underdog hope again before Marius Bülter (107th) scored for TSG.
The professional goalkeeper also made a mistake in Halle: Nikola Vasilj couldn’t get the ball away, Cyrill Akono won the duel and scored to take the lead (11th minute). Johannes Eggestein (48th minute) managed to equalize in the second half, but Marius Hauptmann (62nd minute) put Halle back in the lead. St. Pauli was close to being eliminated in regular time, but Adam Dzwigala (90th minute +4th minute) saved the Bundesliga team and took it to extra time, where Lars Ritzka (110th minute) made the favorites cheer.
In Wiesbaden, the hosts took the lead through Tarik Gözüsirin (15th), Dominik Kohr (59th) equalized. Mainz were rarely convincing after that, and this game also went into extra time. In that extra time, however, Jonathan Burkardt (113th) scored for FSV. Nadiem Amiri (120th+1) decided the game.
