The Paraguayan Football Association (APF) presented this Friday Gustavo Alfaro as coach of the national team Paraguay replacing his dismissed compatriot Daniel Garnero.
“We have very good material to carry it forward”said an optimistic Alfaro, former coach of the Costa Rica team in the Copa América in the United States.
The Albirroja, with 5 points in seventh place in the South American qualifying table for the 2026 World Cup, will visit Uruguay on September 6 in Montevideo and will host Brazil on the 10th in Asunción.
World champion Argentina leads the regional qualifying round with 15 points. Uruguay follows with 13. Brazil is sixth with 8 points.

“I would like to have players who support their national team. There is nothing nicer than playing in a World Cup”stressed the former coach who also led Ecuador in Qatar 2022.
The Paraguayan Association paid $600,000 to Costa Rica to secure Alfaro’s dismissal and hiring.
“We have very little time and a lot to do. For me it is a great and wonderful challenge, and for me it is a privilege to lead the Paraguay national team,” said the former Boca coach at a press conference.
Alfaro admitted that it was difficult for him to leave the Costa Rican national team.
“It was very difficult for me to leave Costa Rica. I had a fantastic relationship with the players. The same thing happened to me when I left Ecuador. It’s difficult to leave a reality like that, it’s difficult to get away from that reality. I don’t have a particular reason for being here,” he stressed.
