Ilkay Gündogan is an important contact for Julian Nagelsmann. The national coach has only words of praise for the retired captain.
National coach Julian Nagelsmann praised Ilkay Gündogan as an “outstanding captain” after his retirement from the German national football team. “I am very proud that İlkay was our captain. He often shone himself, and even more often he let others in the national team shine. We will miss his fine foot and his good ideas,” said Nagelsmann in a statement from the German Football Association (DFB). Nagelsmann stressed that he would have liked to continue working with Gündogan, but that his decision was respected.
Gündogan, still a professional at FC Barcelona, is ending his career with the DFB team after missing out on winning the European Championship at home. At the age of 33 and after 82 international matches for Germany, Gündogan is surprisingly retiring from the national team jersey.
“For me and for us, he was an important contact person, the exchange with him was enriching, even on topics outside of football. He is an intelligent, reflective and very warm person,” Nagelsmann (37) praised his former captain. Gündogan played a “fantastic European Championship for football Germany and his intelligence always fascinated and inspired me, as did his confidence on the ball, his clever and clear passes.”
