One and a half months after the European Championship exit, captain İlkay Gündoğan is also finishing his time with the German national football team. The 33-year-old is ending his career in the DFB team, following world champions Toni Kroos and Thomas Müller, who retired directly after the tournament in their own country.
Gündoğan: “Proud of 82 international matches for my home country”
Gündoğan played 82 international matches in 13 years and scored 19 goals: “A number that I could never have dreamed of when I made my debut for the senior national team in 2011,” wrote Gündoğan, who was appointed captain by then national coach Hansi Flick just eleven months ago, on his social media channels. He looks back with “a lot of pride on 82 international matches for my home country.”
The highlight of his DFB career was “clearly the huge honour of being able to lead the team as captain at our home European Championships last summer! After all the years before, we finally managed to make the nation proud again.” Even before the European Championships, he felt “a certain tiredness in my body, but also in my head,” “which got me thinking. And the games at club and national level are not getting any less.”
Is İlkay Gündoğan leaving Barcelona?
It remains to be seen, however, whether this club will continue to be FC Barcelona. As the broadcaster Sky reports, the Barca management has clearly informed the midfielder that he should leave during this transfer window.
