The story of Justin Fashanu, the first footballer to openly declare himself gay

Justin was born in the surroundings of a poor family on the outskirts of London, at just six years old he experienced the separation of his parents and the entire family since he and the rest of his siblings were given away adoptionBut that stage of his life would not be the only one in which the young man would suffer.

Together with one of his brothers, they were adopted by a middle-class family where sport was common, so he began to practice boxing and football, a sport in which he excelled enough for several recruiters to take an interest in him. Despite his initial success in football, including a record transfer that made him a the first black player to be sold for a million poundsthe pressure and rejection he faced due to his sexual orientation severely impacted his career.

Fashanu made history by becoming the first professional footballer to publicly reveal his homosexuality, an act of bravery in an environment where intolerance was the norm. Settled in USAbelieved that he could overcome all the turmoil that his statements had caused in the United Kingdom, but far from the waters calming down, a sexual abuse complaint began to mark its end.

Once the allegation became public, the former striker turned coach decided to escape and travel to London where a few weeks later he decided to take his own life. “I have realised that I have already been found guilty. I don’t want to give my family and friends any more worries. I hope that the Jesus I love will welcome me; in the end I will find in Him the peace I never had,” Justin wrote in a letter without knowing that the American justice found no evidence to declare him guilty.

Throughout his life, Fashanu faced not only racial discrimination, but also the stigma associated with his sexuality, which led to him being rejected by his peers, clubs and society in general. His story, although tragic, is a testament to the fight against prejudice and thanks to his courage every February 19 (his birthday), he is commemorated International Day Against Homophobia in Sport.
