Former professional boxer Regina Halmich will soon be competing in a TV exhibition match against entertainer Stefan Raab. Beforehand, she criticizes what she sees as the lack of public attention given to German boxers.
Former professional boxer Regina Halmich has called for the sport to have a greater presence in the German public. “Women’s boxing has become totally established worldwide. We just have a problem in Germany. But it’s the same for men: boxers simply no longer have a platform on television,” the 47-year-old told the German Press Agency.
After the boxing boom in this country in the 1990s, which lasted until the 2010s and made greats like Henry Maske and the Klitschko brothers famous, interest has declined significantly in recent years.
Halmich: “The German championship no longer counts”
“People always want ready-made world champions and ratings-bringers, but they don’t grow on trees,” said Halmich. “A German championship no longer counts for anything here in Germany. It is not mentioned at all in any newspaper or magazine. I do regret that,” she added.
Halmich will compete against entertainer Stefan Raab in a TV exhibition fight on September 14 in Düsseldorf. The TV channel RTL will broadcast the duel, which has already taken place twice in the past. After a long absence from TV, the former TV Total presenter Raab is returning to television.
