Roland Schwab succeeds Jan de Brandt, whose contract was not renewed, as national coach of Austria’s volleyball players. The man from Mondsee will continue to exercise his head coaching position at the Linz-Steg steel volleyball club, which the 38-year-old has won two championship titles and three cup victories since he took up his position in 2016, at least until the end of the season. “I have to see what happens after that,” says Schwab.
Since 2015 he has been in charge of various Austrian junior selections parallel to club activities, most recently as assistant coach to De Brandt. Schwab knows the players, the system and the key people in volleyball at home. The promotion to team boss was the logical consequence, says association president Gernot Leitner: “The commitment has emerged. His success in club volleyball has made him an increasingly hot candidate for this post.” For the bridge master maker, a wish comes true with the new responsibility. “I can’t think of anything better and bigger than taking my next career step as a coach in this way,” says the brother of ex-Rapid captain Stefan Schwab.
Today he is playing a test match with Steg in Linz-Kleinmünchen against a US college selection in which a potential reinforcement is playing on the diagonal position. The spring start takes place on Saturday at home against Sokol / Post.
