Nobody could celebrate like him: Christoph Daum was a football coach who always showed his feelings on the outside, whether joy, anger, disappointment. A few weeks before his 71st birthday, he died surrounded by his family; in 2022 he had already made it public that he was suffering from lung cancer.
Daum was one of the Bundesliga’s greatest coaches, leading 1. FC Köln, Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart to success. And yet Daum was always an unfinished business: his dream of a career as a national coach, which had already been a foregone conclusion in the early 2000s, was shattered after Daum’s cocaine scandal became public.
The drug rumors were leaked by Bayern boss Uli Hoeneß, who was Daum’s arch-enemy for decades. It was only in recent years that the two men reconciled, talking about old times and their feud at Tegernsee. Daum’s death “deeply affected” him, said Hoeneß. “Christoph Daum never avoided a dispute in his entire life, but we both made our peace a long time ago.”
