Christoph Daum has died. In the past few months, our reporter visited him twice at his home in Cologne. Here he remembers the meetings with the coaching legend.
It was one of the first warm spring days of the year when I met Christoph Daum for the last time. Magnolias were blooming in the front gardens in Cologne-Hahnwald, and Bayer Leverkusen was only a few match days away from winning the first Bundesliga championship in the club’s history. We wanted to talk about that, about the looming end of the Vizekusen stigma that had stuck with the club and, in a way, with Daum since Leverkusen had given away a title on the last match day under his leadership.
