American Football: Teenager suffers brain injury and dies

Tragic incident at a football game in Selma, USA: The 16-year-old quarterback of a high school team was fatally injured in a tackle.

It was the first game of the new season, and it ended in tragedy: a high school football player from Selma, Alabama, died after suffering serious injuries during the game.

According to media reports, 16-year-old Caden Tellier, quarterback of Morgan Academy, was fatally injured on Friday during a tackle in the third quarter of the school’s home game against Southern Academy. He was flown to the hospital at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, but could not be saved.

Footballer dies of brain injury

It is assumed that “a blood vessel in Caden’s brain burst during a routine play in which he carried the ball and fell to the ground,” US broadcaster CBS News quoted Michael McClendon, director of the Alabama Association of Independent Schools, as saying on Sunday. However, the school is still “collecting details about the accident” and it could be “quite some time before we know more about his injury.”

Morgan Academy principal Bryan Oliver also told CBS News that Teller had suffered a brain injury. The 16-year-old was “a shining light every day he graced the halls of Morgan Academy,” Oliver wrote on the school’s Facebook page. Caden will never be forgotten, given what he meant to Morgan Academy. The school has canceled all athletic activities for the coming week.

Tellier’s organs are apparently to be donated

The teenager’s family also turned to the public: “Our boy, Caden Tellier, has met Jesus face to face. We are grateful for all of your prayers, which we also ask for for the difficult days ahead,” wrote parents Jamie Tellier and Arsella Slagel Tellier on Facebook.

“Everyone who knows Caden has experienced his kindness, generosity and love, and true to his nature, he gives himself once again,” his parents wrote. The way he lived touched many people, and now, through his death, more lives will be saved.”

According to school principal Oliver, Caden Tellier was an organ donor.

Meanwhile, a campaign has been launched on GoFundMe to raise money for the bereaved. “One way we can support the Tellier family in their grief over this tragedy is to cover the numerous costs of medical care, rescue flights and funerals, as well as the time they are unable to work,” writes initiator Kristen Jones on the donation page. Of the $100,000 promised, almost $75,000 had already been received by Monday afternoon CET.
