Tennis: “The best in the world”: Djokovic easily advances at US Open

Novak Djokovic’s break after his Olympic triumph is not noticeable at the start of the US Open. In the first round, he takes revenge for his brothers.

Title favorite Novak Djokovic completed his mandatory task at the start of the US Open without any problems. In his first match since the Olympic triumph in Paris, the 37-year-old Serb clearly defeated qualifier Radu Albot from Moldova 6:2, 6:2, 6:4.

Djokovic is aiming for his 25th Grand Slam title and could be the first male tennis professional since the Swiss Roger Federer in 2008 to repeat his US Open success from last year. He won in New York’s Arthur Ashe Stadium for the 78th time – more often than any other male tennis player.

“It’s the biggest and loudest stadium we have in the history of our sport. It’s an electrifying atmosphere,” Djokovic said shortly after midnight. “The night sessions are the best in the world.”

Possible semi-final against Zverev

For the first time in his career, Djokovic faced the 34-year-old Albot and was never really challenged. He wanted to take revenge for his two younger brothers, who had both lost to the Moldovan, joked the four-time US Open winner shortly before the match. In memory of his victory in the final at the Summer Games against the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, he entered the court with two golden bags.

Djokovic could face German number one, Alexander Zverev, in the semifinals.
