“Being there is everything!” That is the Olympic credo, it is said again and again. In fact, this quote is no different than many other well-known sayings – it is not entirely true. The saying is ascribed to Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who is considered the father of the modern Olympic Games. The French played a major role in the fact that the Olympic idea from antiquity was revived with the Athens Games in 1896. The original quote, allegedly expressed as a comment on a dispute over the winner of the 400-meter run at the 1908 Olympics in London, reads: “Taking part is more important than winning”.

It is obvious that most athletes don’t quite see it that way. You strive for gold, silver or bronze. Our photo series shows the German athletes who managed to achieve one of the medal ranks in their disciplines at the Tokyo Games.
