The members of the German team have decided: canoeist Edina Müller and triathlete Martin Schulz will lead the 148-strong squad at the opening of the Paralympics in Paris.
Canoeist Edina Müller and triathlete Martin Schulz will carry the German flag at the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games in Paris. The 41-year-old paraplegic and the 34-year-old, who has been missing his left forearm since birth, will lead the 148-strong German team at the opening ceremony on Wednesday (8 p.m./ZDF) on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées towards the Place de la Concorde.
“It’s a great feeling – crazy,” said Müller, who won Para gold in both wheelchair basketball and canoeing during her career. Schulz, from Leipzig, added at the German team’s opening press conference in Paris: “I’ve been thinking for a while over the last few months that being a flag bearer could be really cool. I didn’t think twice when the offer came.”
President Friedhelm Julius Beucher of the German Disabled Sports Association set the goal of returning to the top ten nations in the medal table. At the 2021 Summer Games in Tokyo, Germany finished twelfth and won 43 medals.
