Paralympics opening ceremony: German squad arrives at Place de la Concorde

The opening ceremony of the first Paralympic Summer Games in France is in full swing. The German delegation has already arrived at the Place de la Concorde.

Led by Edina Müller and Martin Schulz, Germany was the fourth of a total of 168 nations to enjoy the impressive backdrop of the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games on the Place de la Concorde in Paris at 8:25 p.m. The paraplegic canoeist and the triathlete, who has been missing his left forearm since birth, were chosen by their team members as flag bearers the day before and are among the German Disabled Sports Association’s great medal hopes.

The route of the German athletes and guides led along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées to the largest square in the French capital, where Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was waiting for the DBS delegation in the stands. Unlike the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games at the end of July, when heavy rain had spoiled the party atmosphere, summer temperatures prevailed in the bright sunshine.
