Bronze for Germany: Maurice Wetekam wins medals at his first Paralympic Games – and has even more plans.
Maurice Wetekam won the first medal for Germany in his Paralympics debut. The 18-year-old swimmer, who was born with a deformity of his left arm, surprisingly won bronze in the 100-meter breaststroke. “It couldn’t have gone better. I’m super happy with it,” said Wetekam. “Unbelievable, it’s an incredible feeling.”
The TSV Bayer Leverkusen athlete was 1.76 seconds behind the winner Stefano Raimondi from Italy. Local hero Hector Denayer took silver.
For Wetekam, the time of 1:07.04 minutes was a personal best. “I have developed a completely new mindset – thanks to the support of the coaching team and family. I have completely changed my training,” Wetekam explained his improvement in performance. “We are now building on that and hope that things will be much better in Los Angeles.” The next Paralympic Summer Games will take place there in 2028.
