Champions League: Only Bayern Munich starts with a home game – VfB at Real

Two days after the draw, the Champions League schedule is set. Four Bundesliga teams have to play away first. VfB Stuttgart have it particularly tough.

FC Bayern Munich is the only team from the Bundesliga’s quintet to start the reformed Champions League with a home game. To kick off the competition, the German record champions will host Dinamo Zagreb in the Allianz Arena on September 17 (9 p.m.). This is according to the schedule published by the European Football Union (UEFA) two days after the draw.

The other four German Champions League participants have to play away first. VfB Stuttgart have what is supposed to be the toughest opponent right from the start: the German runners-up are playing at the same time as FC Bayern against defending champions Real Madrid, which includes the still unlucky superstar Kylian Mbappé.

Three more away games

Borussia Dortmund will face FC Bruges in Belgium on September 18th (9 p.m.). At the end of the first match day on September 19th, German champions Bayer Leverkusen will play at Feyenoord Rotterdam (6.45 p.m.), while RB Leipzig will be guests at Atlético Madrid (9 p.m.).

UEFA has comprehensively reformed the premier class. Instead of playing in groups, all 36 participants play in a league. Each club competes against eight opponents. The first eight teams in the table at the end of the league phase qualify directly for the round of 16. The teams in positions 9 to 24 play in a new knockout round to advance. The Champions League final will take place on May 31, 2025 in Munich.
