The fans of VfB Stuttgart paid tribute to their deceased former champion coach Christoph Daum before the Bundesliga home game against 1. FSV Mainz 05. The spectators in the Swabians’ arena rose from their seats and applauded for a long time – a picture of Daum was shown on the scoreboard.
Daum led VfB to the championship in 1992 in a dramatic season finale. For many years he was one of the most influential coaching figures in German football. On August 24, he died surrounded by his family at the age of 70 after a long battle with cancer.
Funeral service for Christoph Daum will take place on September 12th
Meanwhile, 1. FC Cologne announced that the memorial service for Daum, who died last Saturday, will take place on September 12th in the Cologne stadium. The club confirmed this on Friday.
The celebration is planned at the RheinEnergieStadion together with Daum’s former clubs VfB Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen as well as the family. The teams will also be wearing black armbands this weekend. There will also be a minute’s silence at 1. FC Cologne’s next second division home game on September 14 against 1. FC Magdeburg.
Daum, who was born in Zwickau and grew up in Duisburg, died last Saturday surrounded by his family at the age of 70. Daum had been battling cancer since autumn 2022.
