The decision about Ilkay Gündogan’s successor as DFB captain is approaching. Leipzig’s David Raum has a clear preference after his experiences at the European Championships.
Before national coach Julian Nagelsmann made his captaincy decision, David Raum spoke out in favor of his friend Joshua Kimmich as the new captain of the national football team. “He is known above all for being very ambitious, for leading the way with his performance and his mentality, and I personally believe that he has the potential for it. He has already shown that at Bayern, being a captain, and also in the national team,” said the RB Leipzig full-back in Sport1’s “Doppelpass”.
Nagelsmann will announce Ilkay Gündogan’s successor on Monday at the DFB team meeting for the Nations League international matches. The latter ended his DFB career after the European Championship. Kimmich (29) is the most experienced player in the current squad with 91 international appearances to date and the clear first candidate for the captain’s armband.
Possible deputies include Antonio Rüdiger, who was rested this time, Kai Havertz and Marc-André ter Stegen, the designated new first-choice goalkeeper. The national team will face Hungary in Düsseldorf on September 7th, and three days later the classic match against the Netherlands in Amsterdam is scheduled. Nagelsmann has named 23 players for his first squad after the European Championships, the only newcomer being Angelo Stiller (23) from VfB Stuttgart. Preparations are taking place in the European Championships quarters in Herzogenaurach.
Cool press conference appearance at the European Championships
Raum and Kimmich developed a football friendship during the European Championships and documented this in a joint, very humorous media appearance. “I have a bit of a feeling that reporters or people sometimes see him as a bit grumpy, but he’s actually a really funny guy, he’s also a child trapped in an adult body and I love that,” said Raum about the Munich native. The tree planting event of the two in the European Championship quarters, which Raum captured on video, caused an internet hype.
