Paralympics in Paris: Schäfer’s challenge: “I’m going to get the thing”

Leon Schäfer is still very disappointed in the long jump. His plan B is to win gold in the 100-meter sprint. From a German perspective, the preliminary round went according to plan, and not just for him.

The German 100-meter sprinters are going into their finals at the Paralympic Games in Paris with great confidence. Defending champion Felix Streng and Johannes Floors, who are competing in the T64 category, qualified in third and fourth place. Shortly afterwards, Leon Schäfer made it into the final. He can also look back on the evening with optimism after a disappointing long jump competition. Schäfer won his heat in the T63 classification. In 2010, his right lower leg and knee were amputated after being diagnosed with bone cancer.

“I haven’t quite followed through yet. I know I can do more and I’m definitely going to get it,” said the 27-year-old about his ambitions.

Felix Streng wants to win again

Streng was one tenth of a second behind the fastest sprinter of the day, the Italian Maxcel Manu. “My goal is absolutely to defend the title. That’s why I’m here,” said the 29-year-old. “That was my goal from the start.” Three years ago in Tokyo he won 100-meter gold.

Floors, who was born with a deformity in both legs and decided to have them removed at 16, said: “The cards are being reshuffled. We have a field where six or seven people can run into the top ranks and I definitely want to leave other double amputees behind me.”
