Paralympics in Paris: Medal set for cyclists: Hausberger celebrates gold

After winning bronze on the track, Maike Hausberger pulled off a surprise on the road. The German cyclists were also happy with silver and bronze. The hoped-for flood of gold failed to materialize.

The German cyclists won a complete set of medals at the Paralympics. In the individual time trial on the road in Clichy-sous-Bois, a suburb of Paris, Maike Hausberger won gold, Michael Teuber took silver and Annika Zeyen-Giles took bronze on the handbike. However, the hoped-for rain of gold did not materialize.

Hausberger surprised everyone on the 14.2-kilometer course and outwitted the competition. The 29-year-old, who has paralysis on the left side of her body, crossed the finish line after 21:30.45 minutes. On the track, she had already won the bronze medal in the 500-meter time trial.

Teuber, who is paraplegic, also had cause to celebrate. The 56-year-old needed 21:18.14 minutes to complete the course and took silver. Only the Spaniard Ricardo Ten Argiles (20:39.51) was faster. “I am overjoyed,” said Teuber. Pierre Senska from Berlin came fourth in the same class.

Zeyen-Giles cannot defend gold

After gold in Tokyo 2021, Zeyen-Giles won bronze on the handbike this year. The 39-year-old finished third in 25:30.84 minutes behind the American Katerina Brim and Australian Lauren Parker. Zeyen-Giles won gold and two silver medals with the wheelchair basketball team between 2004 and 2016 and has now won a medal for the third time as a cyclist.

Andrea Eskau missed out on her 16th Paralympic medal at the Summer and Winter Games on the handbike. The 53-year-old finished sixth in 26:35.88 minutes. Jana Majunke, winner in Tokyo in 2021, also only came fifth on the tricycle in 29:40.76 minutes.
