Tour of Spain: Third victory: Groves wins 17th Vuelta stage

Kaden Groves wins the mass sprint on the 17th stage of the Tour of Spain. Rival Van Aert has been given the all-clear after his serious fall.

Professional cyclist Kaden Groves celebrated his third daily victory at the 79th Tour of Spain. In what was probably the penultimate chance for the sprinters, the Australian triumphed on the 17th stage ahead of the Czech Pavel Bittner and the Belgian Vito Braet. After the 141.5 kilometers between Arnuero and the northern Spanish city of Santander, no German was among the top ten professionals.

Groves remains in the green jersey for the best sprinter. The Australian took over the jersey from Wout van Aert after the Belgian’s crash the day before.

No fractures for van Aert

Meanwhile, van Aert’s Dutch Visma team gave the all-clear: the cycling star has not suffered any fractures. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to compete in the World Championships in Zurich, which begin on September 22nd. The all-rounder, who won three stages at this year’s Vuelta, sustained a knee injury in a fall on a descent.

Thursday is likely to be the last chance for the sprinters. However, the last climb of the first category just 45 kilometers from the finish could put the fast professionals under pressure. But after that, the route is mostly flat to the finish in the Izki Nature Park in the Basque Country. The tour ends with an individual time trial on Sunday in Madrid.
