“Talking is winning,” the City’s new campaign to prevent underage gambling

The City Government, together with the City Lottery, launched a new campaign that seeks to raise awareness about the use of technology and the risks of gambling among minors.

In light of the launch of the new campaign, the Head of Government of the City of Buenos Aires, Jorge Macrinoted that “online betting is growing day by day and this is a real problem. You have to be very clear and understand that this is not the case with boys. Through online betting platforms, practices and habits are developed that can cause anxiety, depression, self-esteem problems and sleep disorders. When consumption becomes problematic, dialogue is essential to understand where we stand, how serious the problem is and how to combat it in the best way possible.”

For its part, Jesus Acevedo, President of the City Lotteryadded that “minors are the most exposed to gambling addiction since they are much more easily influenced and manipulated. When a minor bets, they do so on illegal sites that do not meet the required standards of control and security. They are designed with algorithms specifically designed to detect their tastes, moods and weak points, and create sophisticated strategies to attract them and make them addicted to gambling.”

The campaign “Talking is winning” promotes dialogue and awareness to work on prevention from a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach. The campaign targets parents, educators, guardians, families and the community in general with messages such as:: “If you think your child is gambling, bet on dialogue”, “If you bet illegally, you always lose” and “Don’t take any chances.”

In this regard, in line with the ongoing effort to raise awareness and address the issue of underage gambling and illegal gambling, The City Government together with the City Lottery (LOTBA) promoted different actions that allowed:

  • Blocking access via the BA WIFI network to more than 1,270 illegal online gambling sites.
  • Blocking access to online gambling sites in 1,770 public schools.
  • Blocking 19 websites and 916 social media profiles that promoted illegal sites.
  • Sending legal letters to influencers and celebrities who promoted gambling on illegal sites.

In summary, “Talking is winning” It is part of the comprehensive program “What’s at Stake” under which various actions are framed to promote responsible, safe and legal gaming. To date, 35 workshops have been held in various clubs and schools, reaching more than 4,500 young people.
