At the closing ceremony of the Games in Paris, two gold medal winners will be allowed to carry the German flag: swimmer Elena Semechin and fencer Maurice Schmidt.
Paralympic gold medalists Elena Semechin and Maurice Schmidt will carry the German flag at the closing ceremony of the Paris Games. This was confirmed by the German Disabled Sports Association following its press conference. The ceremony at the Stade de France begins on Sunday at 8.30 p.m.
Fencer Schmidt was unbeatable in his second participation with the sabre. The visually impaired Semechin, who swims under the name Krawzow for sponsorship reasons, secured gold in the 100 meter breaststroke.
“Outstanding role models for German para-sports”
“Elena and Maurice, representing the entire Germany Paralympics team, have inspired millions of people with their achievements,” said delegation leader Karl Quade. “They are worthy flag bearers – and not least because of their brilliant sporting successes and impressive personalities, they are outstanding role models for German para-sports.”
At the opening ceremony on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in the direction of the Place de la Concorde, triathlete Martin Schulz, who won bronze, and canoeist Edina Müller were the German flag bearers. Müller is still in action on Sunday and is initially fighting for a place in the final.
