National football team: Füllkrug misses match against Holland and leaves early

Niclas Füllkrug was one of the goalscorers in the 5-0 win against Hungary. The goalscorer was injured in the top match of the Nations League against the Netherlands. The national coach had to re-plan.

Goalscorer Niclas Füllkrug is out for the German national football team’s top match in the Nations League against the Netherlands. The 31-year-old attacker will not be able to play in the evening (8.45 p.m./RTL) in the Johan Cruyff Arena due to Achilles tendon irritation in his left foot, as the DFB announced a few hours before kick-off.

Füllkrug was in the starting eleven in the 5-0 Nations League win against Hungary in Düsseldorf last Saturday and scored the opening goal. It was his 14th goal in 22 international matches. During the follow-up training session on Monday evening in the arena in Amsterdam, he tried training with a blue tape on his lower leg, but stopped early. “It is not yet clear whether he can play,” Nagelsmann had said earlier in the press conference.

Füllkrug was due to return to London early on match day to join his new club West Ham United. Kai Havertz is now expected to play as a centre-forward against the Dutch. Against the Hungarians, he played behind Füllkrug in the attacking line with Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz. Nagelsmann actually did not want to change this new variant.
