At the beginning of September, the arson attack on Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei shocked everyone. Her alleged attacker and life partner also did not survive the attack.
Following the death of Ugandan Olympic participant Rebecca Cheptegei in an arson attack in Kenya, her alleged attacker has also died of his injuries, according to the hospital treating her. Dickson Ndiema Marangach died the previous evening, a representative of the hospital in the city of Eldoret told the AFP news agency on Tuesday. Marangach, whom the police had described as Cheptegei’s partner, suffered burns to 30 percent of his skin in the attack.
According to police, Marangach doused 33-year-old Cheptegei with petrol and set her on fire in her house in Kenya on September 1. Just a few weeks earlier, the runner had finished 44th in the marathon at the Olympic Games in Paris. The mother of two suffered burns to 80 percent of her skin and died last week.
The attack on Cheptegei sparked grief and anger and is considered another horrific example of gender-based violence in Kenya. At least two other athletes have been killed by their partners in the East African country since 2021.
Rebecca Cheptegei and Marangach in dispute
Cheptegei will be buried on September 14 near her parents’ home in eastern Uganda, the Uganda Olympic Committee said. Her father had told reporters that his daughter was in dispute with Marangach in Kenya over the land where Cheptegei lived with her sister and daughters.
