Two weeks ago, professional ice hockey player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew died. At the memorial service, the NHL professional’s widow announced surprising news.
Meredith Gaudreau, wife of the late NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, gave a tearful eulogy at her husband’s memorial service on Monday, which lasted almost 30 minutes. “John and I had the best six months as a family of four. They will always be the best six months of my life,” said the widow. She will especially cherish one week of that. “We are actually a family of five. I am nine weeks pregnant with our third baby.”
John and Meredith Gaudreau already have a two-year-old daughter and a son who is a few months old. The pregnancy was a “total surprise” for both of them, Guadreau said. John beamed with joy and immediately “kissed and hugged” her.
Johnny Gaudreau and his brother died in accident
The 31-year-old US national player Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, who was two years younger, died in a traffic accident in the US federal state of New Jersey on August 29. Both were riding bicycles when they were hit by a car and fatally injured. The driver is suspected of being drunk. The brothers had actually wanted to celebrate their sister’s wedding the following day.
Matthew would also soon have become a father for the first time. His wife Madeline Gaudreau announced the news on Instagram in June.
The funeral of the two brothers took place on Monday with great sympathy. In addition to family members, numerous professionals and Gary Bettman, head of the North American ice hockey league NHL, attended the ceremony near the US metropolis of Pennsylvania.
Gaudreau, known by the nickname “Johnny Hockey,” had initially played for the Calgary Flames for nine years in the NHL and was about to begin his third season with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He collected 642 points in his 644 games. At the last World Cup in the Czech Republic, he scored the goal that made it 3-0 in the US team’s 6-1 victory over the German selection.
